Mission

Our purpose is to investigate, collect preserve and communicate whatever may relate to the history of the Town of Hopkinton and its people.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Abenaki Seeds Project: The Society participated again in the Abenaki Seeds Project, through which local growers can help ensure food security for the Abenaki people by growing heritage seeds. Food growers donated their produce to the Abenaki Food Shelf and the Hopkinton Food Pantry. The Society updated a growing guide for the heritage seeds with recipes for people to try at home.

  2. 2024 Exhibit: Last years exhibit, Thank You Hopkinton! Celebrating a Tradition of Care and Kindness was curated by Trustee Sienna Larson. It was a fabulous exhibit, filled with more than 125 personal stories submitted to the Society. Programs included a Humanities Council program with Dr. Maria Sanders on her book, The Quest for Happiness; a nature walk around Kimball Lake with naturalist Linden Rayton; Community Storytelling with old and new townsfolk; a Night at the Museum with a story read by Trish Walton and a show and tell of objects in the Societys collection; and a book discussion group moderated by Digit Taylor of The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

  3. Frederick Douglass Speech Reading: For the past several years, the Society has participated in the Black Heritage Trail of NH's statewide reading of Frederick Douglass's speech, What to the slave is your Fourth of July?. All attendees read a portion of the speech, if they would like. It is a meaningful time to read and hear the speech and reflect upon its meaning.

  4. Traveling Exhibit: Originally an exhibit at the Society in 2020, the Society was asked to transform it into a traveling exhibit to go to schools, historical societies, and libraries. With a grant from the N.H. State Council on the Arts and a wonderful intern, we created Abenaki Trails, which was exhibited in 2023 at the Monadnock Center for History & Culture in Peterborough, N.H. It also traveled to Maple Street School and Hopkinton Middle/High School, and included programs with Abenaki artists. The Society has received an additional grant from the Arts Council and brought the exhibit and Abenaki artists to Maple Street School and Beech Hill School in 2025 as well as the Loudon, NH Historical Society.

The 4 programs described on its FY2025 Form 990, listed largest first by expense. Program spending in total: $22,936.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $240 → $2k.

3 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 60% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of New Hampshire Antiquarian Society DBA Hopkinton Historical Society’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

New Hampshire Antiquarian Society DBA Hopkinton Historical Society leans on a few funders — its largest provides 49% of grant income and the top three 88%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

87% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund New Hampshire Antiquarian Society DBA Hopkinton Historical Society.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

60% of New Hampshire Antiquarian Society DBA Hopkinton Historical Society's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $40k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
