Mission

Program

  1. Since 2010, neighborhood forest has mobilized over 3,500 schools, libraries, and youth groups, engaged over 500,000 volunteers, and given over 310,000 children in all 50 states (plus canada and mexico) the opportunity to plant their very own tree. We are growing at a rapid rate and are aiming to reach 1 million children in the next few years. In 2025 alone, neighborhood forest gave over 112,000 kids their very own tree. We served over 1,500 schools, libraries, and youth groups in all 50 states, plus canada and mexico. We engaged over 175,000 volunteers and the trees we planted are expected to sequester upwards of 60,000 tons of co2 over the next 30 years. In 2024, neighborhood forest also launched and piloted its new indoor plant program for kids who do not have access to a yard to plant their own tree. Continued on schedule o.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2022 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $46k → $55k.

5 of 12 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 55% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NEIGHBORHOOD FOREST INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NEIGHBORHOOD FOREST INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 32% of grant income and the top three 72%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

55% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NEIGHBORHOOD FOREST INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2022 77% · 2023 45% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

55% of NEIGHBORHOOD FOREST INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $218k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Minnesota, across 6 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $266k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
