What Middlesex United Way Inc does

Mission

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Celebrating Housing Success:Krystal Rivera and her family officially moved into their new home in East Hampton during the summer of 2023, thanks to the support of a Community Impact Grant from Middlesex United Way to Middlesex Habitat for Humanity. This funding also supported the organization's shift toward constructing energy-efficient prefabricated homes-offering a sustainable and affordable path to homeownership for more families in Middlesex County.

  2. Investing in Mental Health and Early Childhood:With support from Middlesex United Way, early childhood educators in Middlesex County received professional consultation to better address preschoolers' mental health. This investment ensures young children receive the emotional and developmental support they need to thrive, setting a strong foundation for future success.

  3. Strengthening Families through Perinatal Care:Middlesex Untied Way funding helped make possible the work of a Perinatal Social Worker at Middlesex Health's Pregnancy and Birth Center. This support ensures pregnant individuals and their families receive comprehensive guidance, mental health support, and referrals to community resources-creating a more compassionate and supportive health experience.

  4. Youth Engagement Through the Arts:Nearly 200 children took part in the 36th Annual Children's Circus of Middletown, made possible in part by a Middlesex United Way Community Impact Grant to Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater. With a commitment to accessibility and equity, the camp offered a sliding-scale fee structure and free meals, allowing children from all backgrounds to learn acrobatics, clowning, and more.

  5. Celebrating LGBTQ+ Belonging:A Community Impact Grant to Middletown Pride supported a record 25 inclusive events in the 2023-2024 grant cycle. These events, including the Pridesgiving Dinner and Queer Swim, helped individuals find connection and safety in affirming spaces. One attendee, previously anxious in public settings, is now a regular participant in community events thanks to the supportive environment created through this work.

  6. Connecting People to Resources:Middlesex United Way's support for Connecticut's 2-1-1 and 988 helplines remains a vital component of its works. From September 2023 to September 2024, there were over 14,000 requests for help from Middlesex County residents via 2-1-1, with the top needs being household/shelter and mental health support. These critical services ensure residents have 24/7 access to help in times of need. The 988 crisis line, aimed at providing immediate support for those dealing with a crisis situation, is also supported by Middlesex United Way.

  7. Returning Dollars to the Community:The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, supported by Middlesex United Way, helped over 600 local taxpayers in 2024, resulting in more than $700,000 in refunds to individuals and families across Middlesex County. These dollars go directly back into the community, strengthening financial security and reducing economic hardship.

  8. United is the Way to a Thriving Community:Middlesex United Way brings people and resources together to address the most pressing needs across Middlesex County.

  9. Through strategic investments, collaborative partnerships, and community-driven initiatives, we support programs that strengthen families, promote mental wellness, build financial security, and create opportunities for all. From helping families access safe, affordable housing and mental health support to investing in early childhood education, youth development, and crisis response services like 2-1-1 and 988, we work to ensure everyone in our 15-town region has the opportunity to thrive. United, we're building a stronger, more connected community-one where everyone has the support they need to succeed.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 15 funders to 16 funders, grant income fell $414k → $258k.

3 of 34 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 5% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $67k from one payer (the same organization on both sides, largest Middlesex United Way Inc); $16k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Community Foundation of Middlesex County Inc). These are real filings, and they are not money Middlesex United Way Inc raised.

From the IRS filings of Middlesex United Way Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 34 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Middlesex United Way Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 22% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

37% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Middlesex United Way Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

62% of Middlesex United Way Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 56% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $142k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
