Mission

Prevention of cruelty to dogs.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Rescue dogs from kill shelters, hoarding situations, accept owner surrenders and strays to keep them out of kill shelters, as space and financial limitations allow. We took in 176 dogs in 2024. We provide for the physical and emotional needs of the dogs we take in to prepare them for adoption. if they are not adoptable, they will remain with us for the rest of their natural lives, except if a Louisiana certified Veterinarian deems a dog is a significant danger to other dogs or to our volunteers with no hope of behavior modification, or the Veterinarian recommends a dog be put to sleep because it has a terminal condition and is suffering. As of 12/31/24, there were 27 adoptable dogs and 4 hospice dogs in house. A summary of medical care provided during 2024: 18 Major Medical cases (over $1000), 16 Minor Medical Cases (under $1000), 104 Spays or Neuters, 62 heartworm tests, 32 heartworm treatments, 741 doses of heartworm and flea protection, microchipped 148 dogs, 121 full sets of shots, 202 sets of puppy shots, 2 rabies shots only, 10 lepto shots only and 790 deworming treatments.

  2. Adopt dogs to good, responsible families who will provide a safe and loving environment for the adopted dogs. We adopted out 168 dogs during 2024. We use Facebook, our website, and free websites to describe our adoptable dogs to potential adopters. In addition we host or participate in various adoption events.

  3. Education and community outreach - We use our website and Facebook page to educate about the importance of 1) Spay and neuter programs to reduce pet over population; 2) Heartworm prevention to reduce the number of dogs that get infected and then owner surrendered or abandoned because of the expensive treatments required to save the dog; 3) Microchipping animals to help them be returned to their owners if the pet is lost or stolen; 4) Cruelty and threats to animals and ways to avoid them, such as excessive heat or cold, hurricane preparedness and evacuation issues, toxic food and plants, and seasonal issues that occur around Easter, fireworks, Thanksgiving and Christmas; 5) The benefits of adopting an older or senior dog and the joy they can bring to your life.

3 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 81% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of METAIRIE HUMANE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

METAIRIE HUMANE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 64% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

81% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund METAIRIE HUMANE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

81% of METAIRIE HUMANE's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $25k that is directly attributable, 96% of it comes from funders outside Louisiana, across 2 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $104k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
