What Merrimans Culinary Scholarship does
Mission
To provide scholarships to students entering or continuing in the field of Culinary Arts in Hawaii.
As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.
Programs
On its FY2023 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.
In light of the August 8, 2023 Maui wildfires, the organization temporarily accepted donations to help support feeding efforts for the people of west Maui.
Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).
After the August 8, 2023 Maui wildfires, the organization provided financial support for the feeding efforts conducted by Merriman's Restaurant in Kapalua and Monkeypod Kitchen in Ka'anapali. In total, this joint effort provided over 67,000 free lunch meals to those impacted by the Maui wildfires from 8/10/2023 - 11/10/2023. The meals were available at Merriman's Kapalua during first 30 days after the fire. Since cell and internet service were down during that time, the organization also provided west side residents with internet access through Starlink. From 9/8/23 - 10/6/23, meals were available for pickup at the Whaler's Village roundabout in Kaanapali as well as the end of the driveway at Merriman's. From 8/12/23 - 11/6/23, nearly 38,000 meals were delivered to those who were unable to leave their homes, first responders, volunteers and community hubs.

Who funds it, year by year
Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.
4 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 67% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is
MERRIMANS CULINARY SCHOLARSHIP leans on a few funders — its largest provides 49% of grant income and the top three 79%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
67% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MERRIMANS CULINARY SCHOLARSHIP.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
67% of MERRIMANS CULINARY SCHOLARSHIP's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $79k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Hawaii, across 6 states.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $156k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
