What Meedan Inc does

Mission

To strengthen journalism, digital literacy and information accessibility for global communities.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Check / 3PFC: In 2025, Meedan continued development of Check, our open source platform for collaborative fact-checking and media analysis. Check powered 58 tiplines serving 143,631 unique users and supported 526,910 conversations between fact-checkers and their audiences in 34 languages and dialects. We also began building Suwali, a new AI-powered conversational tool that helps journalists and civil society organizations serve their communities with their own trusted content, in their own languages. By the end of the year we were testing Suwali with six pilot partners across Egypt, Lebanon, India, and the United States. With our Research program folded into this work, the team also published peer-reviewed research on evaluating AI systems, including a paper that won an Outstanding Paper Award at the Association for Computational Linguistics annual conference.

  2. Community Impact Programs: In 2025, we partnered with 79 media and civil society organizations operating in 57 countries, supporting 2,903 journalists across the Larger World. The work was organized along three verticals: elections, safe and inclusive information ecosystems, and crisis preparedness and response. We distributed funds directly to independent media and civil society partners, including regrants under our fiscal sponsorship of the Alliance for Trust in Media and a Press Forward local news grant to Deep South Today. Our partners also advanced climate justice work in Sudan, Syria, Yemen, and Indonesia, helping their communities understand natural disasters and the long-term effects of climate change.

  3. Gendered Disinformation: Building on 2024 collaborative efforts to track gendered disinformation in South Asia and Latin America, in 2025 we supported 11 partner organizations working to counter gender-based violence online. These partners include feminist groups, civil society organizations, and digital safety experts who document gendered disinformation, develop counter-strategies, and adapt technology to meet these challenges at the regional and global level.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 6 funders, grant income rose $35k → $3.4M.

8 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 22% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Meedan Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Meedan Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 31% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

55% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Meedan Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

57% of Meedan Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 44% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.8M arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
