01What it does

What Mbeya does

Mission

Mbeya is a christian, religious, charitable organization that exists to equip church leaders in the northern region of malawi through theological education and practical outreach

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Operation and Staffing of Zola Zola Community Center in Malawi: Mbeya continued the operation and staffing of Zola Zola Community Center. We had four full-time Malawian staff living at the center. Mbeya provided school fees, meals and boarding fees for ten youths from the community. Mbeya provided six youth camping/retreats throughout the year, and provided scholarships for students unable to afford the fees. With students from the Bible College, we continued offering classes at the center and evangelism programs in the community. Youth and children's programs, such as drama clubs, choirs, dance clubs and community outreaches reached people in the thousands. Special Christmas, Easter and Mothers Day programs reached community members in the thousands.

  2. Operation and Staffing of Bethel Bible College (BBC) in Mzuzu, Malawi. The Bible College offers theological courses for interested indivduals in the northern region of Malawi. The main Mzuzu campus as well as our off-site Msongwe site were staffed and maintained with a year-round presence of students, staff, teachers, outreach programs, and our ongoing partnership with Zola Zola Community Center. The Bible College campus serves as the Malawian office for Mbeya, with two full-time staff in 2024 residing on the premises. Impact from the Bible College includes 16 students, 2 interns, 15 part-time youths, and hundreds of program beneficiaries in the community.

We continued offering retreats at the rural retreat/outreach center in Tekero as well as the undertaking of some major building projects at the center, including new housing dorms, bath/toilet blocks, security perimeters, increased flood controls, solar installation and a short-term, shallow borehole. Local impact is felt in the way of jobs provided. Primary impact is for urban youths from Zola Zola who attend the youth retreats. Secondary impact is for students of the Bible college who run the programs, plan the events, and teach the classes for the retreats

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income rose $6k → $13k.

4 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MBEYA’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MBEYA leans on a few funders — its largest provides 92% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MBEYA.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 83% · 2020 100% · 2021 98% · 2022 99% · 2023 97% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of MBEYA's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $86k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
