01What it does

What Matthew Perry Foundation does

Mission

Drawing inspiration from matthew's life, the foundation is committed to raising awareness and fostering understanding about the nature of addiction and working to dismantle the barriers of stigma that prevent people from seeking and receiving care.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2024 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

The foundation's activities include engaging with experts in the field of addiction to provide eduction, awareness, and resources to those suffering. Through education and awareness, the foundation works to dismantle the barriers of stigma that prevent people from seeking and receiving care. To that end, the foundation has donated to california grassroots non-profits that align with our mission statement. We have a fellowship with massachusetts general hospital. Mass general is a leader in addiction and treatments. In 2025, we sponsored "heal appalachia", an orgianization that addresses the opioid crisis while accessing vital recovery resources.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. The foundation issued grassroots grants under our grassroots recovery grants. The program provides financial assistance to diverse groups that play a crucial role in offering hope and recovery to individuals affected by substance use disorders, but that may not have the resources or recognition ofter required to secure traditional funding. The foundation worked directly with community leaders and the state legislature to identify programs in dire need. These grants help bridge gaps in individual recovery journeys and fill them with support from leaders on the ground.

  2. The foundation partners with dr. Andrew herring, highland hospital, and the public health institute in launching a transformative telehealth program to support incarcerated individuals suffering from opioid use disorder (oud). The stark truth is that it is cheaper for the state to let those who are suffering die than to provide them the treatment they vitally need. The pilot program has shown that connecting incarcerated individuals to addiction specialists before release, significantly improves follow-up care and reduces the risk of overdose. We are aiming to expand this program statewide, ensuring continuity of care for those who need it most.

  3. Our first fellowship is the Matthew Perry Foundation fellowship in addiction medicine at massachusetts general hospital (mgh). Led by dr. Sarah wakeman, a national leader in addiction medicine, this fellowship exemplifies our commitment to reshaping how addiction is treated and perceived. The one-year fellowship offers a robust combination of inpatient and outpatient care training, with a strong focus on treating substance use disorder in populations disproportionately impacted by addiction. Physicians receive hands-on experience and specialized training designed to prepare them for leadership roles in addiction medicine.

  4. Other program services, not described on the e-filed return.

1 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is

MATTHEW PERRY FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 100% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MATTHEW PERRY FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

100% of MATTHEW PERRY FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $600 that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from California funders.

CA

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $457k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
