01What it does

What Masonic Charity Foundation of New Jersey does

Mission

The Masonic Charity Foundation of New Jersey (the "foundation or home"), incorporated in 1930, is a nonprofit corporation. The foundation delivers personalized services and compassionate care, inspired by the spirit, ideals, and values of freemasonry, to promote the highest quality of life for freemasons, families, and others in the community through retirement living, healthcare services and hospice services. The general operations of the foundation also include receiving, maintaining, and administering endowments and funds exclusively for charitable, benevolent, and retirement services.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. The foundation provides senior housing and healthcare services through several areas of the retirement settings: independent living apartments and cottages: assisted (comprehensive personal care) living, long term nursing care and short term sub acute rehabilitation. The foundation provides services to residents who meet certain criteria at amounts less than its cost of providing care. The level of benevolent represents the difference between the charges for providing care and payments received for services amounting to approximately $395,000.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 7 funders, grant income fell $187k → $145k.

2 of 18 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 3% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $888k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Grand Lodge of New Jersey Ashlar Fund Inc). These are real filings, and they are not money MASONIC CHARITY FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY raised.

From the IRS filings of MASONIC CHARITY FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MASONIC CHARITY FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 41% of grant income and the top three 83%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

39% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MASONIC CHARITY FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $47k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
