What Local Artists Berkeley does
Mission
Local Artists Berkeley is a California non-profit organization which seeks to provide public access to artwork through public exhibition and display for educational, informational, and cultural purposes. LAB encourages the artistic and cultural interests of the community by providing a showcase for art created by local and greater Bay Area artists. In furtherance of these goals, LAB acts as a consultant and project manager for the selection and installation of artwork for temporary display in behalf of public and private entities.
As stated on its FY2021 Form 990-EZ.
Program
Hesperian Triangle Temporary Public Art Program, Sand Leandro CA. LAB created this program, sent out a Call for Art, received 27 submission by 17 artists. City Art Commission selected the artwork. LAB installed a sculpture by Marguerite Elliot to be dispaly for 12 months. Artist recieved $7,500 grant and LAB paid expences.
The first program described on its most recent Form 990-EZ.
Who funds it, year by year
2021 → 2023: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $10k → $11.
2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 5% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of LOCAL ARTISTS BERKELEY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 3 of 4 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
LOCAL ARTISTS BERKELEY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 95% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2021 100% · 2022 99% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
LOCAL ARTISTS BERKELEY draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside California, across 1 state in all.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $521 arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
