01What it does

What Kundalini Research Institute does

Mission

Our mission is to make the benefits and practice of kundalini yoga, based on the teaching of yogi bhajan, accessible to all people from all backgrounds. We strive to uphold three pillars of purpose: training and education of students and teachers, conducting research on the benefits of kundalini yoga, publishing authentic material about kundalini yoga, and collaborating in the creation of resources with teachers and students globally.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. We strive to uphold three pillars of purpose: training and education of students and teachers, conducting research on the benefits of kundalini yoga, publishing authentic material about kundalini yoga, and collaborating in the creation of resources with teachers and students globally. Training & education kri collaborates with teacher trainers around the world to create the global methods and standards for training and certifying kundalini yoga teachers. The aim is not just to create more than instructors of yoga able to lead exercises, but emotionally and spiritually mature human beings able and willing to serve humanity through their own unique gifts. From the beginning, teachers are taught to build leadership in students instead of focusing on collecting students. We want to bring this helpful, healing practice to more people and not focus on any one individual. By sharing widely, we seek to foster a culture of true equanimity. This is a collectively focused training program divided into three levels of certification. Research many practitioners experience kundalini yoga as a way to access the natural healing capacity of our own body and mind. But todays healthcare environment…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $259k → $523k.

6 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 98% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of KUNDALINI RESEARCH INSTITUTE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

KUNDALINI RESEARCH INSTITUTE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 95% of grant income and the top three 98%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund KUNDALINI RESEARCH INSTITUTE.

How long its funders stay

29% of KUNDALINI RESEARCH INSTITUTE's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 60% give in more than one year at all.

Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

98% of KUNDALINI RESEARCH INSTITUTE's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $47k that is directly attributable, 93% of it comes from New Mexico funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
