01What it does

What Jess Roskelley Foundation does

Mission

The Jess Roskelley Foundation exists to promote public projects and outdoor activities that will benefit generations to come and provide access to the wild places cherished by Jess, while preserving his legacy as a lifelong Spokane, Washington native and elite international alpinist. The Foundation funds public park playground features.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. In 2021, the Jess Roskelley Foundation partnered with the City of Spokane to provide two unique climbing play structures for children two to twelve at Audubon Park in Spokane. The Foundation purchased the structures and had them shipped to Spokane. The City installed the features on in December 2021.

  2. On April 15, 2022, the Jess Roskelley Foundation signed a pledge to Spokane County Parks to contribute $100,000 in 2025 for the children's playground climbing features planned for the County's and City of Spokane's renovation plan for John H. Shields Park in east Spokane. This is a big commitment for our small foundation, so we will be fundraising and applying for grants to cover this pledge. Spokane County has transferred responsibility to the City of Spokane to renovate Shields Park. Federal grant money and a bond issue have now been acquired as of 2026. Our foundation will contribute our pledge of $100,000 to the City of Spokane in June/July 2026.

  3. In 2022, we partnered with the Columbia Basin Foundation to renovate and improve Coulee City Park on Banks Lake. We provided $5000.00 for the project, plus expertise and advice on climbing features. The Jess Roskelley Foundation is fully involved in working to raise additional funds for this park up to $50,000. As an update, due to lack of federal authorization, the climbing feature was installed in the playground at Coulee City Elementary School and the project is complete.

  4. In 2023, the Jess Roskelley Foundation provided $2,035 to the City of Spokane Parks Department for additional renovation of Audubon Park to add a rock scramble at the children's play area. The renovation was scheduled for Fall of 2023 but was postponed due to the City of Spokane's financial difficulties. The rock scramble is now scheduled to be installed in spring 2024. As an update, funding was secured and the rock scramble was built and completed in September 2025.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $35k → $3k.

4 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 62% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of JESS ROSKELLEY FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

JESS ROSKELLEY FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 37% of grant income and the top three 66%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

68% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund JESS ROSKELLEY FOUNDATION.

Where its funders are

62% of JESS ROSKELLEY FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $39k that is directly attributable, 58% of it comes from funders outside Washington, across 3 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $64k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
