01What it does

What It Starts With Soccer does

Mission

Combine soccer with community outreach projects to promote lasting change inimpoverished african communities .

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Sustainable School Farms and Agriculture Education Program - We build school farms (including greenhouses, goat corrals, water access) to rural schools in Zimbabwe and provide livestock (goats typically), and weekly in-person agriculture education to the students. The farms generate food for the schools and income for the schools, as well as teach the students how to make a living through farming.

  2. Running soccer clinics and tournaments, providing school supplies and instruction to rural African schools.

    $10,024 spent
    16% of program spending
  3. The Bethesda Village Project involved two schools: Bethesda Primary School & Bethesda Secondary School. The village and schools are located about 30 kms outside of Victoria Falls and receive little outside help. We did a community transformation which involved several projects. 1.) We drilled a well; installed a solar pump; installed piping to the school; and put spigots at the schools. The well is used by the entire village and provides clean water for all. At the schools, the water not only provides clean water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning, it also is key to maintaining the new farm we built for the schools. 2.) We built a greenhouse; built a goat corral; and planted an orchard (primarily orange and mango trees). We also supplied the goats for the farm (15). We provided seedlings and gardening tools to get the farm going. 3.) We built a soccer field, complete with metal goals, provided school uniforms and balls.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 3 funders, grant income fell $26k → $20k.

4 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 99% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of It Starts With Soccer’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

It Starts With Soccer leans on a few funders — its largest provides 49% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund It Starts With Soccer.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 99% · 2018 62% · 2019 75% · 2020 44% · 2021 64% · 2022 55% · 2023 50% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

50% of It Starts With Soccer's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 50% give in more than one year at all.

first grant+1y+2y+3y+4y+5y

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

99% of It Starts With Soccer's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $2k that is directly attributable, 58% of it comes from funders outside Texas, across 4 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $264k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
