What Inwater Research Group Inc does
Mission
Irg's mission is to provide the scientific community and the general public with information to promote conservation of coastal and marine species and their habitats.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
In 2025, IRG successfully captured, tagged, sampled, and released over 600 threatened and endangered sea turtles across eight field sites throughout Florida. This effort included attaching five satellite tags to loggerhead turtles and 10 acoustic tags to juvenile green turtles to study their movements and migratory patterns. Biologists also partnered with universities, rehabilitation facilities, and aquariums to collect additional samples to support broader sea turtle conservation efforts. Findings from ongoing research were shared through peer-reviewed publications, regional and international conferences, and various social media platforms. This information was also incorporated into IRGs wide range of educational initiatives.
$1,494,563 spent$2,179,634 earned by the program72% of program spendingIRGs education initiatives reached thousands of individuals through hands-on conservation programs spanning local, statewide, and international audiences. In 2025, our programs expanded across schools, Spanish-speaking communities, and global partner networks, reaching more than 30,000 participants through classroom education, community workshops, and international ambassador programs. Efforts included educator training, new program development, expanded partnerships, and culturally responsive conservation initiatives that strengthened environmental stewardship and increased access to science-based learning opportunities.
$337,746 spent$5,202 earned by the program16% of program spendingIRG made significant progress on sea turtle abundance estimation and deterrent testing projects. In 2025, we completed our second season of saturation tagging on Hutchinson Island, with 1,869 captures representing 901 individual nesting sea turtles. We also collaborated with FPL and another vendor to complete construction of a test tank that will be used to evaluate behavioral deterrents designed to keep sea turtles away from anthropogenic hazards. In addition, IRG deployed three ARIS sonar systems at the end of 2025 to monitor the timing and location of sea turtle entry into the canal system. We also developed transects for offshore abundance surveys, using both visual observations and side scan sonar, to estimate the abundance of sea turtles that could potentially become entrained.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $523k to $1.1M (+106%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 2% · 2021 25% · 2022 4% · 2023 3% · 2024 0%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
18% of Inwater Research Group Inc’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (68% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $72k → $143k.
3 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 37% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of Inwater Research Group Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
Inwater Research Group Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 35% of grant income and the top three 68%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
79% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Inwater Research Group Inc.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 45% · 2018 41% · 2019 88% · 2020 77% · 2021 65% · 2022 49% · 2023 36% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
60% of Inwater Research Group Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 73% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
Inwater Research Group Inc draws 70% of its grant income from funders outside Florida, across 5 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $345k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
