What Hull Lifesaving Museum Inc does

Mission

The driving principles of the 19th century coastal lifesavers - skills, courage, and caring - are foundations of the hull lifesaving museum's commitment to impact individual lives for the better. We foster a community dedicated to the preservation of boston harbor's rich maritime heritage and lifesaving traditions through exhibits, collections, open-rowing programs and stewardship of our historic sites.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The museum memorializes and celebrates the lifesaving crews of hull, bringing to life their deeds of selflessness and seamanship that during the final decades of the age of the sail, saved over 1,000 shipwrecked mariners on the shores of hull and cohasset. The museum is open year-round, presenting a permanent exhibit including the original 1889 lifesaving boat "nantasket", three visiting exhibits each year, monthly lecture series, an annual art show and a summer children's program. Dramatically located at the mouth of boston harbor facing boston light, the station is the site of the greatest number of rescues from shipwreck in the country and hosts 12,000 visitors per year.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 5 funders, grant income rose $24k → $50k.

2 of 22 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 31% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of HULL LIFESAVING MUSEUM INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

HULL LIFESAVING MUSEUM INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 17% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

39% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HULL LIFESAVING MUSEUM INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $103k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
