What Historic Boulder Inc does
Mission
Historic boulder fosters the spirit and promotes the benefits of preservation through education, advocacy, rehabilitation and celebration.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
Education outreach: historic boulder produced 33 educational events highlighting the value of historic preservation in our community. We produced live architectural history tours at ncar, mid-century modern homes, pearl street, "little rectangle" (historic black owned homes), and an art & architecture tour in a private home. Lectures and panels included: creating historic districts, street names of boulder, impact of the federal labs on boulder, frederick law olmsted and early city improvers, central park landmarks, and modern architecture. These were presented at the rotary club, university of colorado, harvard gsd reunion, frasier senior living, academy senior living, and the museum of boulder. Our history hikes highlighted historic structures on open space.
$45,275 spent$6,096 earned by the program39% of program spendingOur signature events, meet the spirits in october and homes for the holidays in december, have become beloved community traditions, drawing nearly 1,600 attendees between them. At meet the spirits, 37 spirit actors in period costumes presented biographical monologues at the columbia cemetery, bringing the history of boulder alive. The event raised over 5,200 for preservation work in the cemetery. Our 38th annual "homes for the holidays" tour highlighted five historic homes in the university hill neighborhood. The houses showcased a variety of architectural styles and histories, including four homes in the 'university place' historic district.
$38,122 spent$39,579 earned by the program33% of program spendingPreservation advocacy: historic boulders preservation advocacy for boulders central park was in high gear in 2024 as we organized a 150-year anniversary celebration of the park and four programs in partnership with the museum of boulder including two focused on the history of people displaced by the park. We developed programs and participated in colorado preservation inc. Statewide conference, as well as the community wide square nail awards. We regularly testified before the landmarks board and city council. Finally, we successfully applied to the state historical fund for the rehabilitation of the faade of the boulder theater, which project will be completed in 2025.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $848k to $1.2M (+37%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 10% · 2018 7% · 2019 6% · 2020 30% · 2021 13% · 2022 33% · 2023 23% · 2024 8%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
76% of HISTORIC BOULDER INC’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income fell $12k → $11k.
3 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 80% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of HISTORIC BOULDER INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
HISTORIC BOULDER INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 57% of grant income and the top three 91%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
91% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HISTORIC BOULDER INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 58% · 2020 100% · 2021 61% · 2022 81% · 2023 100% — growing more concentrated.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
80% of HISTORIC BOULDER INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $18k that is directly attributable, 62% of it comes from funders outside Colorado, across 4 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $72k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
