What Grass Roots Events Inc does
Mission
School for chiapas supports the efforts of autonomous mayan communities of chiapas, mexico to provide a just and dignified education for their children.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Education for solidarity and support for autonomy - our work in 2025 encompasses 3 principal areas: community health education and promotion, community literacy and autonomous education, and local and international collaborations in outreach and dissemination around social movements, political context and human rights. Our work as educators, facilitators and organizers is dynamic and involves multiple populations --communities who are organizing themselves and building autonomous systems of health, education, and production (this could be groups of youth, of fathers or of women); internationals visiting chiapas who seek to immerse themselves in an education unique to the territory; and those at a distance who are uncovering the knowledge and experience that continues to arise from the indigenous maya struggles for justice and dignity.

In 2025, this meant that $55,780 of coffee and handmade goods from 13 collectives in chiapas were sold to 975 customers. In cooperation with imagenarte in san cristóbal, our online store exists to provide an outlet beyond local markets and to raise awareness through concious consumption.

There, we host weekly educational seminars on the history and current context of the peoples and movements in chiapas and beyond; we host orientations for human rights observers; we welcome local groups for organizing political and cultural events; and we support local markets and artisans collectives.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $307k to $166k (−46%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 28% · 2022 0% · 2025 0%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
67% of GRASS ROOTS EVENTS INC’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $21k → $6.
4 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 46% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of GRASS ROOTS EVENTS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
GRASS ROOTS EVENTS INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 54% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
46% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GRASS ROOTS EVENTS INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 100% · 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 99% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
GRASS ROOTS EVENTS INC draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside California, across 1 state in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $52k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
