01What it does

What Golden Opportunities for Independence Inc does

Mission

To empower our clients to live independently, unencumbered by the challanges of daily living associated with medical disabilities. We match each client with a service dog that meets their individual needs. It is our goal to be flexible with the time needed for the recipient to take their service dog into their lives and provide training services for the life of the dog.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. For over 25 years, our founder has developed a proven system for breeding, raising, and training service dogs specifically for individuals with disabilities. Our dedicated volunteer breeder caretakers nurture our breeding dogs and care for newborn puppies for the first eight weeks of their lives. Following this, volunteer puppy raisers take on the vital role of socializing and providing basic obedience training to our gofi puppies. Each puppy receives professional training at our facility, with every hour dedicated to their care contributing to their growth as future assistance dogs. Our professional dog trainers work intensively with each dog for up to 22 months, teaching them to master essential tasks like picking up dropped items, opening doors, and operating lights to aid individuals with physical disabilities. Over the years, we have bred and trained more than 100 dogs through this successful program. Skilled companions increase independence for children and adults with physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities, with support from a facilitator, usually a parent or caregiver. Working dogs collaborate with professionals who serve clients, school children, or…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $500 → $39k.

5 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 59% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENCE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENCE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 33% of grant income and the top three 66%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

69% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENCE INC.

Where its funders are

59% of GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENCE INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $131k that is directly attributable, 97% of it comes from Massachusetts funders.
