What Girard College Foundation does
Mission
To promote and enhance the educational facilities and services provided to the students of girard college (an elementary and secondary school) and other philadelphia area schools by raising funds from the alumni and friends for these institutions.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Pennsylvania opportunity scholarship tax credit program:the program provides tax credits to eligible businesses contributing to an opportunity scholarship organization. Business contributions are then used by opportunity scholarship organizations to provide tuition assistance in the form of scholarships to eligible students residing within the boundaries of a low-achieving school in the commonwealth of pennsylvania to attend another public school outside of their district or nonpublic school. A low-achieving school is defined as a public elementary or secondary school ranking in the bottom 15 percent of their designation as an elementary or secondary school based upon combined math and reading pennsylvania system of school assessment (pssa) scores.the Girard College Foundation is an opportunity scholarship organization and used these proceeds to provide approximately 80 partial scholarships to students that attended girard college during the 2024-2025 school year.

The poem structures itself around the famous lay-up by philadelphia 76ers leg endary mvp julius erving (aka "dr. J.), a revered figure among philadelphia athletes/role models. Dr. J's balletic athleticism in the 1980 nba f inals--during which he flies for a seemingly impossibly long time before making that incredible shot--is "seen" through various lenses gay's 70-page, elegiac homage. The work's themes are particularly meaningful for girard, where young people of color are spring boarded to seek "flight" from trauma: to college, a career, a way out of upbringings marked by poverty, hunger, homelessness, abuse, addiction, neglect, violence and incarceration. As there are approximately 120 students who are in high school at girard college, all of them will ultimately either participate in or experience this program as a spectator. The project has two components: (1) a multi-year residency where the artists meet at girard in the fall and spring each year…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $4.2M to $5.4M (+30%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
100% of GIRARD COLLEGE FOUNDATION’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (57% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $108k → $130k.
6 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 33% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is
GIRARD COLLEGE FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 36% of grant income and the top three 76%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
76% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GIRARD COLLEGE FOUNDATION.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 57% · 2018 69% · 2019 54% · 2020 68% · 2021 66% · 2022 41% · 2023 52% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
56% of GIRARD COLLEGE FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 50% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
95% of GIRARD COLLEGE FOUNDATION's grant income comes from Pennsylvania funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $496k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
