01What it does

What Gainesville Chamber Orchestra Inc does

Mission

The gainesville chamber orchestra will provide to alachua county and surrounding areas quality programs through traditional and contemporary repertoire, which will entertain, enrich and educate a diverse and broad-based audience.

As stated on its FY2026 Form 990.

Program

  1. The gainesville orchestra is gainesville's only professional orchestra. We have seven, typically sold out, concerts each year. We also have an annual children's concert where we bus in 1,500 area school children to see their first live orchestra concert. The orchestra performs by invitation in st. Augustine for the prestigious emma concert series. Every year we have broadway singers who perform with our orchestra for a very special audience experience. At our pops concert each year we invite the audience to walk throughout the orchestra while they are performing to immerse themselves in the performance on the stage. We also invite prominent local artists to paint a portrait on stage while the orchestra plays, completing the work of art before the performance is over. Disney chose gainesville orchestra to be the first orchestra in the world to perform the music from "frozen," which is proof of the high regard for our maestro and orchestra. We now operate a children's mentoring program where we teach violin lessons to approximately 150 students at two elementary schools. We provide 90 violins for student use and pay qualified instructors, with instructional costs exceeding $4,000…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 3 funders, grant income rose $26k → $55k.

2 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 44% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GAINESVILLE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GAINESVILLE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 48% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

44% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GAINESVILLE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $180k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
