01What it does

What Friends of the Morrill Homestead Inc does

Mission

To foster an awareness of the legacy and accomplishments of Senator Justin Smith Morrill of Strafford, Vermont

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. For most of the 2025 Season, the Morrill Homestead site was closed to the public in anticipation of major underground construction to alleviate significant drainage issues adversely affecting the property. So most of our normal schedule of classes and events had to be cancelled. To provide alternative programming, the Friends sponsored a late June bus trip to visit four historic sites across the State that had an association with Morrill's life: Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home, The Frost Stone House Museum at Bennington College, the Governors Mansion - Park-McCullough House, and the Bennington Battle Monument. The bus was full, the day was long, and everyone had a wonderful time.

  2. Morrill was a true Renaissance man, whose interests spanned a broad spectrum of the arts and sciences. Capturing the spirit of the man who was responsible for much of the art adorning the Capitol in Washington, the Friends again scheduled an art exhibit and reception featuring over 50 miniature works by 17 artists from throughout the Upper Valley. Because the major construction work on the site had not begun, we were able to hold this "Minis for Morrill" party on site. An estimated 100 people attended the free event, which kicked off Strafford's Independence Day celebration and featured an array of savory hors d'oeuvres prepared by Board Members.

  3. As part of our ongoing effort to provide alternative programming to offset the cancellation of our normal event calendar, the Friends hosted an engaging speaker series at the Strafford Town House on three Sunday afternoons in July, August and September. Topics covered constitutional rights and the integration of the arts and literary works addressing social justice, diversity, and current political climates. Speakers included: Constitutional scholar Meg Mott from the Vermont Humanities Speakers Bureau... author and educator Julia Alvarez who read from her latest book, "The Cemetery of Untold Stories"... and Shirley Jefferson from the Vermont Law School, who discussed "Where do we go from Here?" All engaged with the audience through questions and discussions. All were brilliant and all three events were well attended.

Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
