01What it does

What Strafford Historical Society Inc does

Mission

Founded in 1955, the mission of the strafford historical society is to preserve the sites, records, objects, and related materials pertaining to the history of the town of strafford for educational purposes and to apply the lessons of history for the solution and betterment of the current affairs of said town.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The strafford historical society continues to renovate the historic 120 year old masonic temple that was purchased in 2021. Before the exhibits, artifacts and displays of early life in strafford can be moved into the building, significant improvements must be made. Current year projects included weatherproofing the basement, including the installing of a concrete floor; upgrading the electrical and plumbing systems; newly plastered first floor walls and ceilings; adding handicap parking and access; and a new climate-controlled attic storage area for fragile archives. The building is expected to be ready for occupancy in the spring of 2026.

  2. All of the materials that were damaged in the 2023 flooding have been restored, thanks to the work of the dartmouth college conservation lab, and have been returned. These items, collections, and furnishings are now stored in the masonic hall. The society began sending quarterly electronic newsletters in the fall of 2024, in addition to the annual newsletter which is mailed to all members. The website is updated periodically with construcion photos and blog posts exploring strafford's people, places, and events from the past.

  3. Current year events included walking tours of strafford village during the summer and fall. During the tours, the shs historian highlights the histories of the buildings located in the village, both present and in the past, including anecdotes about who lived and worked in the village. The society offered one program during the year, held in the unfinished building, a film about the ransom family farm. The 2025 annual meeting included a demonstration of a new research project, "history in the present". The goal of this project is to create a digital archive of events and people's memories that help us understand how people in a small town in vermont create community today. As part of this project, over the summer two student interns began documenting the history and importance of coburn's store. Contributions to the oral history of the store continue to be accepted.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $50 → $68k.

4 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 84% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 42% of grant income and the top three 77%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

92% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

25% of STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 67% give in more than one year at all.

Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

84% of STRAFFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $36k that is directly attributable, 50% of it comes from funders outside Vermont, across 5 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $190k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
