01What it does

What Friends of Rutherford Pool does

Mission

Friends of Rutherford Pool is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. These functions include management and maintenance of rutherford community pool as a community asset in order to support the health, recreation opportunities, and water safety training of members of our community, with a focus on children and youth.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. During 2024, the pool was open for the season as usual after spending $200k to resurface the inner lining of the pool. The pool had over 20,000 visits with the majority of our patrons being children/youth. With grants from the metroparks and washtenaw county, we were able to give out free swim lessons to residents, mostly living in the 48197 and 48198 zip codes. Over 450 toddlers, children, and youth received swim lessons as well as 50 adults. Students who attended at least 80% of their classes were given free pool passes good for 5 visits. The ypsilanti otters, a non-profit, community-based swim organization, hosted its summer practices and swim meets for children and youth at rutherford pool as well. The pool worked in partnership with ypsilanti community schools to provide free daily pool passes to over 3,000 students and with the ypsi district library to give out another 1,000 passes through their summer reading program. In august, we hosted the annual kids' triathlon and the ypsi night out event, in partnership with the ypsilanti housing commission. We continued to build our list of community partners working with parkridge community center, the ann arbor area ymca, educate…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $35k → $22.

5 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 64% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of FRIENDS OF RUTHERFORD POOL’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

FRIENDS OF RUTHERFORD POOL has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 25% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FRIENDS OF RUTHERFORD POOL.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2019 43% · 2020 57% · 2022 74% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

64% of FRIENDS OF RUTHERFORD POOL's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $65k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from Michigan funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $115k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
