What Friends Against Abuse does
Mission
Friends Against Abuse supports victims of crime through advocacy, direct services, and education. We empower individuals, families, and communities to break the cycle of violence, fostering healing for all.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
The majority of work done by Friends Against Abuse is advocacy - crime victim advocacy. In 2025 there were three advocates covering koochiching and lake of the woods counties. They provide guidance, resources and support to victims. The advocates assist victims with filing court documents. The advocates attend court on behalf of their clients. The work of Friends Against Abuse is centered around the crime victim advocate and their work. The crime victim advocates account for the greatest expense and they have the greatest impact on the clients that we serve. In 2025, the crime victim advocates served 248 victims of crime. During that time there were 107 victims of domestic violence, 85 victims general crimes and 26 victims of sexual assault (25 of the victims were children).
$227,854 spent76% of program spendingThe 24/7 crisis line is answered by volunteer phone advocates who answer calls outside of the business day. In 2025 they answered 52 calls. Normally, the number of calls into the crisis line range from 170 to 270 calls per year. The phone advocates receive a small stipend which is less than federal minimum wage, so this program is funded through a grant from the united way of northeastern minnesota and donations from lake of the woods county and the city of international falls.

Direct client services includes safe housing, rent, storage unit rental, phone, phone replacement, cellular minutes, gas cards, food cards, local bus tickets, lock re-key/lock replacement, motion lights, ring camera or a bus ticket to st. Cloud. In 2025, Friends Against Abuse provided $8,571 in direct client services to victims in koochiching and lake of the woods counties.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $633k to $443k (−30%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income rose $9k → $37k.
1 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of FRIENDS AGAINST ABUSE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
FRIENDS AGAINST ABUSE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 66% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
34% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FRIENDS AGAINST ABUSE.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 89% · 2018 100% · 2019 85% · 2020 66% · 2021 91% · 2022 88% · 2023 81% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
100% of FRIENDS AGAINST ABUSE's grant income comes from Minnesota funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $140 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
