01What it does

What Float Research Collective does

Mission

Establish worldwide acceptance for floatation-rest (reduced environmental stimulation therapy) as a treatment to naturally relieve pain, stress, anxiety and other related conditions.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Project arcturus - create a cloud based system for commercial float centers to connect their frequent floaters/members to report information such as how often they float, why they float, and what benefits they receive from floating. This will be a global study and the plan is to officially publish the results when completed. 2025 has been an execution year getting the software setup to be able to roll out the project to float centers in 2026.

  2. Maui calm project - maui is in the midst of a massive mental health crisis due to the horrific trauma from the fires. The maui calm project has been set up to provide a new type of disaster relief, a purpose built center to offer free clinical float therapy for anyone on maui who is suffering from the trauma of the fires. Clinical float therapy is a safe and non-invasive treatment that has been shown to help people with trauma, anxiety and ptsd. Built into shipping containers, these float centers can be rapidly deployed to maui and placed near lahaina in order to make the therapy as accessible as possible to everyone who has been traumatized.we received approval from hawaii community foundation for a $238k grant in 2024 to be paid in two installments in 2025. We additionally raised the funds required by the terms of this grant to unlock the first payment. These additional funds were to allow manufacturing to commence on a 3 room float center in a 40 foot shipping container. This will then be shipped to maui and setup on the ground in lahaina near where the fires occurred. The grant will fund the first full year of operations to allow all first responders and fire survivors (or…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 27% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of FLOAT RESEARCH COLLECTIVE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

FLOAT RESEARCH COLLECTIVE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 45% of grant income and the top three 94%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

48% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FLOAT RESEARCH COLLECTIVE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

FLOAT RESEARCH COLLECTIVE draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside Hawaii, across 3 states in all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $25k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
