What Ephrata Cloister Associates does

Mission

The ephrata cloister's historic buildings, collections, and programming invite the exploration of this unique community's spiritual, creative, and intellectual accomplishments by encouraging visitors to develop a personal connection to pennsylvania's significant role in religious toleration and intellectual freedom. The Ephrata Cloister Associates is dedicated to the continued preservation and promotion of the ephrata cloister through the sponsorship of special cloister related events such as lantern tours, apple dumpling day, day of music, christmas at the cloister, the student historian program and other education programs for special audiences. The ephrata cloister chorus, sponsored by the associates, is unique as it relates to the museum and the historic site. The chorus performs several of over 1,000 hymns written at the site. In addition to ephrata's past, the group performs compositions from other early american communities including works from the shakers, the moravians, the ha

Program

  1. A community-based not-for-profit since 1958, the organization, in partnership with the pennsylvania historical and museum commission, creates programs that feature the unique music, art, architecture, and spiritual practice of this pre-revolutionary community. The organization supports the cloister chorus, founded in 1959, which offers historically informed performances of music composed in early ephrata. Regular site programs and an artisan-rich museum store combine with a calendar of sponsored special events like winter history class, school-based community days, christmas at the cloister, the ice cream social, and chorus concerts as a means to engage the community, invite exploration, promote local tourism, and preserve the legacy of this national historic landmark. The organization also provides visitor services and regular guided tours; raises funds; and assists in acquiring artifacts using money donated to the back to the cloister fund.

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 3 funders, grant income rose $6k → $37k.

3 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 73% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of EPHRATA CLOISTER ASSOCIATES’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

EPHRATA CLOISTER ASSOCIATES leans on a few funders — its largest provides 48% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

73% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund EPHRATA CLOISTER ASSOCIATES.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $116k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
