What Elderberry Wisdom Farm does
Mission
Elderberry Wisdom Farm provides holistic workforce opportunities for Native Americans pursuing meaningful conservation career pathways, including microenterprise business development. We also provide opportunities for Native Americans, economically challenged individuals and public audiences to increase awareness and understanding of traditional ecological knowledge along with the rich cultural heritage of America's First Peoples. Committed to race reconciliation for all, we feel this strengthens appreciation and respect for the wisdom and knowledge of Native American elders, cultural leaders and indigenous scientists.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
The TEK Workforce Development Project provides conservation career pathway opportunities for Native American and other economically challenged individuals who are pursuing habitat restoration, native plant nursery development, urban agroforestry, Indigenous agroforestry and organic farming. Internships provide cohorts with classroom education and experiential service-learning activities so they can integrate Traditional Ecological Knowledge principles and practices with partners' conservation practices. At the same time we work to restore, enhance and protect sensitive Native habitat in Mid-Willamette watersheds using Native American climate adaptation and mitigation practices. This initiative has expanded to include microenterprise development which has helped EWF strengthen its commitment to social, economic and environmental justice for diverse communities of economically challenged individuals in our region. Multiple collaborative partnerships with diverse environmental and tribal NPOs, agencies and institutions have helped EWF and partners to achieve its vision of race reconciliation at a higher level.
$289,149 spent$133,871 earned by the program100% of program spendingThe biography of Martin Rufus High Bear, the late Lakota spiritual leader and medicine man, is being published and was released in 2024. The title is: Martin High Bear: The Seven Commandments of the Sacred Buffalo Calf Maiden (1919-1995). Editor Rose High Bear worked off and on for three decades to complete this obligation after the Spirit World advised her in 1988 that she would be writing the book of Martin's life and that it would "have an impact on the peoples of the world." This biography features High Bear's family lineage, tribal history, and rich cultural values of Martin's ancestors. Several chapters feature the three spiritual lives Martin lived during his lifetime. It continues with the introduction of the Sacred Buffalo Calf Woman and Martin's vision of the seven commandments of the Sacred Buffalo Calf Woman. The closing chapters detail his journey to see Miracle, the white buffalo calf that was born in Janesville, Wisconsin which represents fulfillment of prophecy, and events leading up to his passing in 1995.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2021, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2021, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $185k to $709k (+283%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2022 20% · 2023 38% · 2024 70%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
85% of ELDERBERRY WISDOM FARM’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (62% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2021 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $20k → $135k.
2 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 12% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of ELDERBERRY WISDOM FARM’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
ELDERBERRY WISDOM FARM leans on a few funders — its largest provides 46% of grant income and the top three 73%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
34% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ELDERBERRY WISDOM FARM.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2021 100% · 2022 64% · 2023 67% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
63% of ELDERBERRY WISDOM FARM's grant income comes from Oregon funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $70k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
