01What it does

What Dimond Improvement Association does

Mission

To make oakland's dimond district a vibrant, safe, and beautiful place for everyone to live, work, shop, and play.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Beautification - dia works to create and nurture a clean, green, and artistically rich community for residents, businesses, and visitors. Through dia's keep dimond clean (kdc) program, started in 2009, litter is picked up 7 days a week-2 days with volunteer crews and 5 days by a small company, paid for through an annual community fundraiser. More than 6 tons of trash are removed each year. Dia greening efforts include tree planting, weeding, and mulching; maintaining planters; & restoring a small area of open space overlooking sausal creek. Dia's public art fund supports the installation and upkeep of murals, mosaics, and sculptures, and a virtual public art tour highlights more than two dozen art pieces.

  2. Community engagement - bringing people together is important to dia and is reflected in our motto "involvement builds community." our spring dimond shine day brings out some 140 residents for hands-on clean-up and beautification activities. Our fall oaktoberfest family- friendly festival draws thousands, showcasing the business district & its german roots, as well as raising the lion's share of funding for our ongoing programs. Our holiday dimond lights crafts fair, co-organized with the dimond merchants association, showcases local artists. Our community grants program offers 1,500 grants to individuals and groups for physical and cultural enhancement projects. Periodic community meetings feature election forums and local speakers.

  3. Public safety - dia works to deter and respond to crime in our community, and reduce panhandling and homelessness in the commercial area, so that merchants, residents, and shoppers can enjoy the dimond and feel safe as they work, visit, patronize, or pass through the neighborhood. Dia has funded and installed four sets of security cameras and supplies video footage to the police and crime victims as needed. Dia also works on pedestrian and vehicle safety by engaging oakland's dept. Of transportation and our city councilperson on sideshow deterrence and crosswalk enhancement.

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $-8500 → $15k.

2 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 64% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of DIMOND IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 4 of 5 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

DIMOND IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 56% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund DIMOND IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $12k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
