01What it does

What D&R Greenway Land Trust Inc does

Mission

D&r greenway land trust's mission is to preserve and care for land, and to inspire a conservation ethic, now and forever.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Permanent protection of land is the heart of d&r greenway's mission. This work is guided by a strategic plan and evaluation of lands to ensure they meet key criteria including, among others: protection of wildlife and bird habitat, migratory corridors, biodiversity, agricultural soils and scenic views; contribution to water quality along a waterway or in a key aquifer; opportunity to provide for public accessibility and connecting trails; and community conservation. The majority of protected lands and conservation and agricultural easements are purchased in partnership with government partners, other conservation nonprofits and with private support. D&r greenway has established a revolving land fund with private contributions toward this purpose. Through stewardship and protection of these lands, d&r greenway provides a public benefit including a healthy environment, local foods, recreational opportunities and quality of life for area residents and visitors.

  2. D&r greenway inspires people to learn about and protect the environment through programming and exhibits that connect people to the land. This includes educational programs by thought leaders at the johnson education center in princeton, art exhibits that highlight the values and beauty of nature and agricultural landscapes, guided walks on d&r greenway preserves, and volunteer and internship opportunities that engage individuals directly in the work of the organization and that teach skills and leadership.

  3. The native plant nursery is dedicated to restoring a rich diversity of native flora to the local landscape. It supplies native plants for d&r greenway's stewardship work, the conservation community, and to the general public, so that the residential landscape might be re-knit with the natural landscape.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 15 funders to 18 funders, grant income rose $213k → $316k.

10 of 42 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 58% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of D&R GREENWAY LAND TRUST INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 42 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

D&R GREENWAY LAND TRUST INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 50% of grant income and the top three 72%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

70% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund D&R GREENWAY LAND TRUST INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

58% of D&R GREENWAY LAND TRUST INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $3.1M that is directly attributable, 91% of it comes from funders outside New Jersey, across 11 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $4.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
