What Circle of Friends Inc does

Mission

Enhancing the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through social engagement, supportative employment and attainable housing.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. CoF continued to operate a coffee shop that is in the student center of a local community college. This center also serves as a co-working site for the countys economic development center. The Circuit Cafe employs adults with IDD, a cafe manager, and many volunteers, fostering intergenerational relationships. CoF began work on a second location, Flourish Cafe, which will be a place for our community members to gather and grow. Flourish Cafe will offer supportive employment opportunities for adults with IDD alongside typical peers and volunteers to provide an integrated employment setting. The space will be used after hours for social events, wellness classes, and CoF meetings.

  2. CoF held monthly large group and weekly small group activities for social engagement for adults with IDD, typical peers, and older adults to interact. Large group activities involved 50+ individuals, and small group activities included 5-20 individuals. Additionally, CoF offered Cooking Classes where our neurodiverse friends learned cooking skills from local chefs and COF hosted a community garden and a Garden Club where local members of the Farm Bureau taught gardening skills. Both activities provided participants with opportunities for volunteers, and corporate sponsors to mentor our neurodiverse friends. These social activities provide an opportunity for adults with IDD and others to be included in the life of the community, and to feel a sense of belonging. People who attend have an opportunity to make lasting friendships and families support one another.

  3. The third strand of the CoF mission is to develop supportive attainable housing for adults with IDD, typical peers, and older adults to live in their own community. CoF leaders have developed relationships with county and state officials and community leaders to bring awareness of the difficulties adults with IDD have in attaining affordable housing. CoF leaders continue research in this area that will contribute to the community design

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $129 → $23k.

2 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 59% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Circle of Friends Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Circle of Friends Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 58% of grant income and the top three 84%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

59% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Circle of Friends Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

33% of Circle of Friends Inc's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 40% give in more than one year at all.

Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

59% of Circle of Friends Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $32k that is directly attributable, 50% of it comes from Georgia funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $46k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
