01What it does

What British American Foundation of Texas does

Mission

See Schedule O.The British American Foundation of Texas (BAFTX) enables financially challenged, Texas-based students who excel academically to fulfill their exceptional potential by supporting their US college education. We also provide a unique student learning experience in the UK, giving an early opportunity to broaden perspective and personal vision. Together, these support their aspirations to become leaders in their chosen fields, changing their lives and communities by increasing access to education and meeting the needs of tomorrow's STEM and business workforce.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2025 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

BAFTX no longer awards the Women in STEM Scholarship. Instead, eligible students are now awarded a general undergraduate scholarship that is available to all applicants who meet BAFTX's established criteria.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. The Undergraduate Scholarship program provides funds to cover educational expenses at a university in Texas for the 2025-2026 school year. It also provides for up to four undergraduate students from Swansea University in the UK to attend a semester at a Texas university, based on the same criteria. In 2025, 122 undergraduate scholarships were awarded.

  3. In 2025, the Susan Howard Community Service Scholarship Award was granted to one deserving student. This student has deferred their payment so no funds were issued in 2025.

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $24k → $48k.

8 of 15 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 63% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of British American Foundation of Texas’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

British American Foundation of Texas has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 30% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

83% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund British American Foundation of Texas.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

20% of British American Foundation of Texas's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 40% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

63% of British American Foundation of Texas's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $101k that is directly attributable, 58% of it comes from funders outside Texas, across 3 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $174k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
