Programs
NET ZERO CARBON LIVING, INDIVIDUALS WORLDWIDE ACTING LOCALLY. We are providing, on our website, an interactive GIS map of US cities that have plans to reach Net Zero. We have produced educational materials about how individuals can lower their carbon footprint and sequester carbon, as a way of achieving a Net Zero lifestyle. Those materials are available on our website and through staff outreach. We expect this project to be ongoing and expanding.
PAVEMENT TO PARADISEThis project was created to show how anyone can reclaim a paved life-less area, and turn it into a life-full wildlife caf, good for humans and animals. During 2022, a long cement driveway was filled with raised beds that are now planted with trees, flowers, herbs and vegetables. It includes a worm bin, compost pile and rain barrel, as well as bee, butterfly and bird houses. Twelve trees were planted to sequester carbon and provide shade, food and habitat. The project will continue through 2023. A solar fountain will be installed. Planting, including a grape arbor will be ongoing, and tours will be open to the public. We hope this will inspire others to reclaim their driveways (and other paved areas) and become part of the worldwide green canopy tree-planting movement.
WOMENS AGRI-ENVIRO VISIONThis is a village-based project in rural Tanzania that is providing women with the education, skills, and plants to improve their lives. They are planting and caring for trees and vegetables in community gardens. In 2022 they planted over 2,000 trees, along with many vegetable gardens.
DOME FIRE RESTORATIONFirstly, square soil plots were created. The seeds were planted using different methods. After winter rains, plants appeared. Unfortunately, none of the species in the native seed mix sprouted, meaning the community of annuals came from the seed bank that was present prior to the Dome Fire. Still, the study presents a fascinating opportunity to investigate the Mojave Desert ecosystems early successional stages in a heavily degraded region, something which has not been studied extensively.Secondly, we recruited a crew of volunteers who planted over 400 plants, again, specific to that area. We are continuing to monitor the plantings. This project will be completed in 2023.

In 2022 and 2023 we are posting an interactive map of the us showing cities with net zero pland (with links to those plans).
Joint efforts sponsored by blue planet:green home tour and earth day events through sustainable claremont - in october and april, sustainable claremont organized a day of tours to 4 homes that are trying to reach net zero carbon footprint. The strategies to do this included home vegetable gardens, native trees, greywater systems to water gardens, solar panels to produce electricity, electric cars, and bicycles.
Joint efforts sponsored by blue planet unifieduna pomona valley high school essay contest- each year the un association sponsors a high school essay contest centered on the role of the un in promoting peace and sustainability. Students from pomona and claremont high schools participated. A committee of retired teachers read the essays and awarded first, second and third prizes.
