01What it does

What Artangel America does

Mission

The organization was formed to assist, collaborate with and commission artists to produce artworks and public projects, as a means of raising awareness of and generating interest in the arts. To achieve those objectives, the organization commissions and produces artworks created by artists from the united states and foreign countries to be displayed for the general public in locations throughout the united states and abroad. In addition, the purpose is to create an american entity to heighten the awareness of and promote the contemporary arts in the united states and abroad.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The organization commissioned to do a project entitled "the mothership" with the artist, yto barrada. She is cultivating a natural dye garden, creating a new dye studio, and center on a semi-wild plot of land perched on the coastline of tangier, morocco. The plants will be harvested to generate a micro-production of natural dyes and pigments sufficient to sustain "the mothership's" workshop and classes throughout the year. A new dye house and studio will be built to accommodate a wide range of classes, workshops, and gatherings. Taught by local and international experts, workshops and classes will be offered in different formats throughout the year for local and international artists, artisans, textile specialists, teachers, high school and college students. From 2022 onwards, "the mothership" will welcome two new artists in residence, nominated by an advisory council.

  2. The organization commissioned a long-term project with american artist, roni horn, in 2007 for a small town on the coast of iceland. What was once a library of books is now the library of water, a series of collections gathered by roni horn and her collaborators in iceland. The project is open to visitors during the summer months and is used by the local community throughout the year for various purposes including meetings, concerts, chess clubs and yoga classes. The studio in the basement which once stored books is now used for a writer's residency for three months each summer.

  3. The waiting room is a site-specific sculptural work by new york-based artist, sarah sze, containing her new work, "metronome", which transforms the long-forgotten vaulted space at peckham rye station with a dense matrix of thin stainless steel tubing, torn paper pieces and moving imagery. Sze says: "I've always been interested in certain times throughout history where our relationship to the way we experience time and space in the world speeds up radically. We are in the middle of an extreme hurricane where we are learning to speak through images at an exponential pace." in response to this "extreme hurricane", the waiting room at peckham rye station offers a model of time and space that reflects and interrogates our volatile world.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income rose $14k → $30k.

1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 22% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ARTANGEL AMERICA’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ARTANGEL AMERICA leans on a few funders — its largest provides 47% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 2 funders.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

ARTANGEL AMERICA draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside New York, across 2 states in all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $14k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
