01What it does

What American Swiss Foundation does

Mission

The foundation promotes friendship and mutual good will between the united states of america and the swiss confederation through exchange of knowledge and dissemination of information about these two countries. (see schedule o).including by connecting and engaging leaders to identify solutions to common issues of global concern and to strengthen our shared values.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

On its FY2024 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

In 2024, the asf entered into a merger agreement with friends of switzerland, inc. (fosi). The asf began hosting the stratton prize dinner, previously hosted by fosi, in october 2024. The merger was still ongoing by year-end 2024.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. The foundation's programs focus on the promising young people of both nations who will shape public opinion and policy in the years to come. Our goal is to inspire them to preserve the centuries-long friendship through active engagement with one another and with the senior leaders in our extensive network. The main program of the American Swiss Foundation is the young leaders conference, held annually in switzerland since 1990. The conference provides a unique platform for shared experiences and respectful dialogue among leaders of diverse cultural, political, and professional backgrounds. (see schedule o for continuation). Alumni of the past 34 conferences now number approximately 1,500 leaders who shape the future of the two countries by sharing insights, fostering constructive dialogue, and building bridges.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $35k → $148k.

4 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 11% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of AMERICAN SWISS FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

AMERICAN SWISS FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 66% of grant income and the top three 82%; half comes from just 1 funder.

How long its funders stay

71% of AMERICAN SWISS FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 69% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $260k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
