01What it does

What Zoeglossia Inc does

Mission

Zoeglossia is a literary organization with a mission to foster an open, supportive, and engaged community that champions and celebrates disability culture, poetics, and creativity. Through its offerings, zoeglossia strives to widen access to arts opportunities and professional development for disabled poets and writers.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Program

Provided an annual retreat where disabled poets from various backgrounds selected as fellows had the opportunity to learn and develop their craft at sessions led by prominet established disabled writers. These retreats which fellows can attend annually over a three year period provide professional development among this shared creative community. Fifteen poets were selected as fellows for the virtual 2023 retreat bringing the total number of zoeglossia fellows to 52. Zoeglossia also provided year-round professional development support and mentoring to its fellows through a google group, virtual writing gatherings, and other activities. Amplified 39 poets by publishing their work in the poem of the week series. Eight of these poets were further highlighted as curators for the series, each of which provides a curatorial statement for the month they have curated. The poem of the week series aims to create a significant archive of disability poems. Accessibility for the series includes audio files for each poem and image descriptions for photos presented. Zoeglossia used its online presence and platform to shine a spotlight on disabled poets and poetics. This included posting poems…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 2 funders, grant income rose $36k → $48k.

1 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ZOEGLOSSIA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ZOEGLOSSIA INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 36% of grant income and the top three 82%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

29% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ZOEGLOSSIA INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 70% · 2020 63% · 2021 53% · 2022 49% · 2023 74% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
