Mission

YG2D is a 501(c)3 non-profit brining diverse communities creatively into the conversation of death and dying, inspiring life by unabashedly sourcing our shared mortality, with concerts, open mics, workshops for the general population, and programming specific to hospice patients, cancer patients, and our prison community.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. We host shows, performances and workshops in accordance with our mission. These take the form of small group workshops, open mics, and larger benefit concerts. We held 35 events throughout the year, both online and in person. We served over 4000 individuals through these events throughout the year.

  2. Our Executive Director, Ned Buskirk, is contracted through YG2D by UCSF Art For Recovery program to bring creative writing workshops to cancer patients at UCSF. Ned sees approximately 50 patients per week, roughly 20% are repeat visits, and serves these patients 3 days a week.

  3. Alive Inside is our prison program. We work inside prisons, including San Quentin, Richard J Donovan, and California Men's Colony in California to bring music, creative writing workshops, and performance opportunities to incarcerated individuals. Our Executive Director, Ned Buskirk, is a weekly facilitator for the Light Keepers, a peer support suicide prevention program inside San Quentin. Our team also works with groups of exonerated individuals who were wrongfully convicted, through workshops and retreats with the Ohio Innocence Project. In 2024 we facilitated a program at the annual Innocence Network Conference, and our Alive Inside program served approximately 400 incarcerated or exonerated individuals and their family members.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 4 funders to 2 funders, grant income rose $8k → $9k.

3 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 67% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of YG2D’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

YG2D leans on a few funders — its largest provides 50% of grant income and the top three 81%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

77% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund YG2D.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

25% of YG2D's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 38% give in more than one year at all.

first grant+1y+2y+3y

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

67% of YG2D's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $29k that is directly attributable, 72% of it comes from funders outside California, across 3 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $60k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
