01What it does

What Woodshed Collective Inc does

Mission

To create a modern performing arts theater.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. Our administrative focus in 2024 was to continue to support our artistic team and work with our Board to explore new artistic projects. We worked with our leadership to continue to ensure the longer term growth of the company.Woodshed spent the year participating in the planning of a huge celebration of the work of Stephen Sondheim. The central idea is that throughout the 29/30 season, Lincoln Center would host the work of this singular artist, alongside an immersion into his working life. The centennial will kick off as a centerpiece of the Summer For The City festival (Camp Sondheim!), instigate a massive nationwide theater event on Mr. Sondheims actual birthday is in March 2030 in partnership with the Sondheim Foundation, and culminates as the theater season ends in Spring 2030. We anticipate many of the commissioned projects for the centennial will go on to have a life beyond the 29/30 season, creating rippling impact and presence. Woodshed is partnering on all the immersive aspects of this initiative. In 2024, we carefully managed our resources to support this work and keep the company alive amidst a challenging landscape of the arts. We streamlined all our public operations…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2021: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $15k → $5k.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 32% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of WOODSHED COLLECTIVE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

WOODSHED COLLECTIVE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 48% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

52% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund WOODSHED COLLECTIVE INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 67% · 2018 51% · 2019 61% · 2020 100% · 2021 100% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $16k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
