01What it does

What Wise Choices for Girls does

Mission

Wise Choices For Girls has developed upwardly mobile leaders who began as young girls in elementary and middle school and have continued through high school, college and graduate school.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

Wise Choices For Girls has been in existence for over 15 years and became a 510(c)(3) nonprofit organization several years ago. Over this time, we have developed upwardly mobile leaders who began as young girls in elementary and middle school and have continued through high school, college, and even graduate school. Throughout this journey, older girls in this group have mentored younger members through tutoring, academic support, and life skill development. Our succcess rate is strong - 98% of Wise Choices girls attend college. Most of our participants come from low-income families and live in public housing, but through Wise Choices they have learned to move forward positively even when the odds are against them. We have proven that with discipline, caring and support, anything is possible. Peer mentorship and community sisterhood are central to our work. With the guidance of older members and certified counselors, participants gain mentorship, leadership skills, and empowerment to pursue education and success.

1 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 60% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is

Wise Choices for Girls leans on a few funders — its largest provides 60% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

60% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Wise Choices for Girls.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

60% of Wise Choices for Girls's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $45k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from California funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $68k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
