01What it does

What Volunteers in Medicine America does

Mission

To build and support a national network of free health clinics that utilize volunteer active-practicing and retired health professionals in caring for low-income, uninsured and underserved populations

As stated on its FY2021 Form 990.

Program

In 2020 our network of 95 clinic affiliates in 30 states provided care to 69,000 unduplicated patients thanks to the dedicated effort of 7,500 clinical and 3,000 non clinical volunteers. 54% of our patients are minorities, 59% are female and 90% are between the ages of 19 to 64. Among the services provided were 200,000 medical visits, 22,500 dental visits and 18,000 behavioral health visits. Due to the challenges of the covid-19 pandemic and additional 38,000 medical appointments were telemedicine encounters. Three new clinics joined the volunteers in medicine alliance in 2020

The first program described on its most recent Form 990, which lists programs largest first by expense.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2021: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income fell $13k → $9k.

6 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 59% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE AMERICA’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE AMERICA leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 78%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

59% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE AMERICA.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

17% of VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE AMERICA's funders are still giving 1 year after their first grant; 13% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2021, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

59% of VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE AMERICA's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $39k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside South Carolina, across 1 state.

South Carolina out of state home

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $55k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
