01What it does

What Volunteers for Outdoor California does

Mission

Purpose is to engage in charitable, scientific, literary, and educational programs and activities, which motivate and enable people to be active stewards of California's public and protected lands and environment.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. In 2025 Volunteers for Outdoor California were able to resumee normal operations although agency partners were still imposing some project size restrictions. Trail work: In 2025, Volunteers for Outdoor California worked in 5 parks and had 1 approved project cancelled by agency partners at the last minute (within a month of the scheduled event) for soil conditions. Our volunteers built over 1/2 miles of new trail on a steep grade, built 3 sets of stairs, repaired and restored over 4 miles of trail, including repairing 2 retaining walls. These projects were all done on either public lands(state, regional & local parks) or publicly accessible lands, organizing and directing the efforts of over 480 volunteers in stewardship efforts.

1 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of VOLUNTEERS FOR OUTDOOR CALIFORNIA’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

VOLUNTEERS FOR OUTDOOR CALIFORNIA leans on a few funders — its largest provides 69% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

31% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund VOLUNTEERS FOR OUTDOOR CALIFORNIA.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $123 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
