01What it does

What United Way of Dane County Foundation Inc does

Mission

The United Way of Dane County Foundation, Inc. exists to support the United Way of Dane County mission: to unite the community to achieve measurable results that change lives. By providing a base of support, the Foundation helps United Way invest our community's resources to achieve the Agenda for Change. The Foundation allows caring community members to create a legacy of giving.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Earnings from the Foundation are Invested in the Strategies that Support our Community's Plan for Community Well-Being - Since its creation, we have worked with delegations, partners, & Community Solutions Teams to create Mobilization Plans, identify research-based strategies to assess, reduce and eliminate the underlying causes of those issues and ultimately bring measurable results. The four areas of the Community Plan for Well-Being are: Youth Opportunity - Helping young people realize their full potential; Financial Security - Building financial stability and strength; Healthy Community - Improving health and well-being for all; Community Resiliency - Addressing urgent needs today and advancing a better tomorrow. Each area has primary, measurable goals and antecedent metrics that are based in best practices. They are not simply measures of the units of service delivered, but of the effect on lives and the changes for better that service recipients experience. Success in changing the human condition is measured by success in moving the needle on these metrics that focus on root causes of community issues. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $55k → $637k.

8 of 12 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 67% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $1.9M from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest United Way of Dane County Inc). These are real filings, and they are not money UNITED WAY OF DANE COUNTY FOUNDATION INC raised.

From the IRS filings of UNITED WAY OF DANE COUNTY FOUNDATION INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

UNITED WAY OF DANE COUNTY FOUNDATION INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 30% of grant income and the top three 68%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

67% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund UNITED WAY OF DANE COUNTY FOUNDATION INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

71% of UNITED WAY OF DANE COUNTY FOUNDATION INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 58% give in more than one year at all.

Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

67% of UNITED WAY OF DANE COUNTY FOUNDATION INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $768k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from Wisconsin funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.5M arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
