Mission

Drowning prevention via public education and promotion of lifesaving professionalism

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Life saving events: the United States Lifesaving Association conducts a national lifesaving competition annually. The 2025 competition was held in huntington beach, ca. Competition encourages lifeguards to achieve the highest possible levels of fitness needed in their lifesaving work, to demonstrate the skills needed in lifesaving to the general public, to encourage exchanges of information among lifeguard agencies, and to raise funds needed to fund usla programs. For a job where seconds count, lifesaving competition raises skills. The competition also instills pride in the lifeguards, promotes their profession through actions which serve to demonstrate that lifeguards everywhere are deserving of the trust placed in them by the public they protect.

This includes topics and activities relating on how to recognize a rip current and the dangers of rip currents, and to always swim near a lifeguard. Resources include: videos, fact sheets, coloring books, bookmarks, posters and teacher resources available in english and spanish. Each year as summer begins, the United States Lifesaving Association sponsors national beach safety week in an effort to remind beachgoers to use caution in the aquatic environment. Coinciding with national beach safety week is rip current awareness week. Rip currents account for over 80% of rescues preformed by surf beach lifeguards. These events are held to educate the public about beach safety and rip currents and how to break the grip of the rip. 1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of UNITED STATES LIFESAVING ASSOCIATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of UNITED STATES LIFESAVING ASSOCIATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
