01What it does

What Umkc Foundation does

Mission

Umkc Foundation's sole purpose is to benefit the university of missouri - kansas city (umkc) by supporting (through funds raised, held and administered by the foundation) academic programs and educational opportunities that will enhance umkc over and above those which are funded with state support, student fees and tuition.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The Umkc Foundation ("foundation") and its employees have the primary responsibility for the solicitation of contributions from private sources for the support of umkc. The foundation solicits contributions which are made to the foundation and held and administered by the foundation for the benefit of umkc. The foundation also solicits contributions which are made directly to umkc or to one of its schools or supporting organizations. The fundraising efforts of the foundation produced the results as shown on the statement of revenue, part viii. The efforts of the foundation have produced pledges and planned giving commitments as shown on the balance sheet, part x. The foundation made grants from earnings of its endowment funds held by the foundation to support various umkc programs in the amounts as shown on the statement of functional expenses, part ix.

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 14 funders to 56 funders, grant income rose $685k → $4.1M.

20 of 121 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 16% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $43M from 14 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Greater Kansas City Community Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money UMKC FOUNDATION raised.

From the IRS filings of UMKC FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 121 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

UMKC FOUNDATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 18% of grant income, and it takes 6 funders to reach half.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

47% of UMKC FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 64% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 13 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
