Mission

Promoting community resilience

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Media FreeStore Operation: we accept donated household items and supply them for free to the public. We serve approximately 300 visitors/week, 50 weeks/year, estimated over 1,000 persons/year.

  2. Hemp Study Group programs: we promote the environmental and economic benefits of using hemp in textiles, food, medicinal aids, wood and construction materials. We created a 6-session video series describing these benefits and held numerous community events featuring activities such as creating hemp pizzas and weaving hemp cords. We explored hemp in construction and made a tablecloth for tabling events from hemp fabric.

  3. Protecting Biodiversity Group programs: We promote and educate about using native plants and reducing pesticide and herbicide use to improve habitats for pollinators and local wildlife. We helped designate the Borough of Media as a Bee City and maintain a pollinator garden as part of that designation. We promote expanding green space and the planting of trees throughout the Media area, as well as healthier alternatives to chemical spraying of mosquitoes. Estimated over 2,000 people reached.

  4. Circle of Aunts and Uncles: This is a donor-funded small business loan fund that we manage. Small, locally-owned businesses can apply for a low-interest loan without collateral. We vet and support applicants to determine their need and ability to repay the loan, offer help with creating a business plan and managing finances. Businesses are typically women- or BIPOC-owned. Three loans have been started, one completed and two currently being repaid.

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $122 → $5k.

1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 8% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $763 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
