Programs

  1. Youth activities: our bikes for books program is the largest under this youth activities category. The program is intended to be executed with a school's reading initiative to support local schools. Lodges are going into the community and working with schools and libraries to propose community participation in the program. This includes partnerships with schools, libraries and community businesses, engaging the community in raising funds, with a shared goal to see free bikes and helmets get into the hands of worthy children who have earned a reward for their efforts. This past year we saw roughly 1,750+ bikes given away. Administrators, children, parents, and lodge members all know this program works and benefits their communities. In addition to the bikes for books program, educational scholarships were given to approximately 30 students. In addition to the funds provided for the bikes for books literacy initiative, other grants are provided to support youth in communities across maine to support organizations, such as scouting america, camp postcard, operation reboot outdoors maine, special olympics, maine dyslexia centers of bangor and portland, big brothers big sisters of…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $25k → $38k.

1 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 2% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE MASONIC CHARITABLE FOUNDATION OF THE GRAND LODGE OF MAINE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE MASONIC CHARITABLE FOUNDATION OF THE GRAND LODGE OF MAINE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 48% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

45% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE MASONIC CHARITABLE FOUNDATION OF THE GRAND LODGE OF MAINE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
