What The Maalgo Project does

Mission

Supporting education through sustainable change in poor, rural communities of Ghana.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Education ProgramThis project is to resource the community schools with teaching and learning material, and related items aimed at optimizing the potential of teachers and students in the community. This program consists of: Maintaining the community library that was built by Maalgo Initiative in 2009; Collecting and shipping school supplies from the USA; Supplementing the textbook supplies for students; Sponsoring teacher in-service training. In 2023, this project constructed 8 new classrooms for primary school children.

    $104,515 spent
    73% of program spending
  2. Lunch programThis program aims to provide basic nutrition for children who would otherwise go hungry at school or fail to come to school because they are too hungry to do so. A committee at the village representing parents and teachers supervise the program. The food is bought from locals or from nearby markets and parents volunteer to cook at the school. No one involved in this is paid except for services such as transportation of the food. The Maalgo project sends money to a partner organization (The Maalgo Initiative) which manages the disbursement through its own bank account.

    $39,231 spent
    27% of program spending
  3. Water Programfunds are spent on: Drilling the well to find potable water that is sufficiently accessed by 600 families daily; Laying the pipes from the well to the storage tanks; Construction of shed for storage tanks; Construction of overheard tanks that distribute water through spigots at a centralized location; and Fence wall to secure water facility.Funds are used to pay for material and labor to execute the project. The Maalgo project sends money to a partner organization (The Maalgo Initiative) from the community of Vea. Maalgo Initiative is a community based nonprofit organization recognized and licensed by the Ghana Registrar General. It operates under the laws of Ghana but coordinates with The Maalgo Project to be sure that funds from the latter are used responsibly. A member of the Maalgo Initiative is the project director and contracts artisans to do carry out the various aspects of the project such as geological drilling, water testing, pump installation, building of wall and tower.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $1k → $1k.

4 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 91% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of The Maalgo Project’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

The Maalgo Project leans on a few funders — its largest provides 43% of grant income and the top three 91%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

91% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund The Maalgo Project.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

91% of The Maalgo Project's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $3k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from California funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $32k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
