What The Bob Moog Memorial Foundation for Electronic Music does
Mission
The Bob Moog Foundation fosters creativity and critical thinking by providing interactive educational experiences drawn from Bob Moogs pioneering legacy of synthesizing science, music, and imagination. We provide hands-on, immersive opportunites for children and adults to explore and engage with the science of sound through Dr. Bobs SoundSchool and the Moogseum. Through these projects, we inspire the next generation of innovative thinkers.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
In 2025, our hallmark education project, Dr. Bobs SoundSchool, once again served nearly 3,000 students in 125 classrooms in the Asheville area, providing an innovative 10-week curriculum that teaches the science of sound through music and technology. We delivered over 30,000 individual lessons to two school districts. We continued to develop and invest resources in creating a custom theremin-based educational tool, the ThereScope. When ready for manufacturing, this tool will enable us to serve children nationwide through our program. By the end of 2025, we had reached the final stages of developing prototypes for both hardware and software versions of the ThereScope and were beginning the process of beta testing.

Moog Theremin, Gary Wrights Moog Liberation, a LAB Series L9 Amp, and a R.A. Moog Segova Amp. We developed detailed cataloging and labeling procedures for all archive materials. With a grant award from the National Endowment for the Humanities, we continued an extensive rehousing project of our historic archival collection.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $359k to $669k (+87%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 4% · 2021 9% · 2022 8%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
36% of The Bob Moog Memorial Foundation for Electronic Music’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $460 → $23k.
7 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 97% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of The Bob Moog Memorial Foundation for Electronic Music’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
The Bob Moog Memorial Foundation for Electronic Music leans on a few funders — its largest provides 46% of grant income and the top three 75%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund The Bob Moog Memorial Foundation for Electronic Music.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 71% · 2023 68% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
97% of The Bob Moog Memorial Foundation for Electronic Music's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $6k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from North Carolina funders.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $158k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
