What The Alliance for American Quilts Inc does
Mission
To promote the understanding of the quilt as an important American grassroots art form, to share stories and documentation about quilts with a broad public and to educate Americans about the importance of documenting quilts and quiltmakers.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Partnership documentation days: Building on previous years quilt documentation days, 2025 saw a new, more sustainable form of documentation days, working with partner organizations to complete documentation days in their local community, or with small local quilting groups. Interviews were conducted with partners including the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (in conjuction with its Routed West exhibit and the Austin Modern Quilt Guild.)
$96,279 spent100% of program spendingVirtual programming and education The Quilt Alliance participated as one of four partner organizatoins in in the fifth year of the Textile Talks lecture series. The QA presented 11 of the 51 talks presented in the 2025 season, with topics including spotlights of quilting luminaries, including Broadway actor Harvey Fierstein, and sister organizations including the AFri. 2025 also saw the return of the Quilt Alliances quilt challenge, a quilt contest with accompanying training about quilt photography and labeling.
Go Tell It at the Quilt Show! 2025 marked the 13th anniversary of this project to document and share stories of quilts where quiltmakers and quilt owners gather. The formula for Go Tell It! is simple: one person talking about one quilt in front of one video camera for three minutes. We continued the virtual collectioin of the Go Tell It! interviews for various QA projects and events, some recorded via Zoom and others recorded and submitted by the Tellers. The Go Tell It! online archive topped 1,000 interviews with quiltmakers in 2025.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2019 to 2020, from $58k to $140k (+141%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2023 23% · 2024 4% · 2025 5%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
98% of The Alliance for American Quilts Inc’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income fell $47k → $30k.
2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 11% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of The Alliance for American Quilts Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
The Alliance for American Quilts Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 69% of grant income and the top three 94%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
31% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund The Alliance for American Quilts Inc.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 83% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
The Alliance for American Quilts Inc draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside North Carolina, across 2 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $20k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
