01What it does

What Surgeon's Data Science Collective Inc does

Mission

We build the infrastructure that powers the digital transformation of global surgery.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Surgical video platform: 2023 was our first year of operations and set surgical video platform (svp) up for success in 2024 and beyond. We hired 4 full-time software engineers, 2 senior software consultants, 2 product advisors, a website design firm, and a contract software engineering company with a dedicated team working on svp. After months of diligent effort, we rolled svp out in october. We had a very positive response, and at year-end had 23 surgeon users, 7,458 surgical videos uploaded, which represent 402 surgical procedures. Uploading and sharing surgical videos to svp is free of charge to any surgeon in the world.

  2. Surgical data science research: 2023 was our first year of operations and set up our research efforts for success in 2024 and beyond. We hired a head of machine learning and a machine learning engineer, along with three enthusiastic volunteers and a surgical adviser. We negotiated contracts with important software vendors and data annotators to enable our ai analysis, annotated tens of thousands of frames of video, and created a hundred thousand bounding boxes around objects detected on video. Most importantly, we built functional machine learning models that automatically detect and identify numerous surgical tools captured on video. As of year-end we are in negotiation with several major academic research hospitals to utilize our models to analyze their surgical videos and help improve their surgical practice.

  3. Education: in october 2023, we hosted the first annual digital neurosurgery conference in palo alto, ca. One hundred and fifty attendees, including surgeons, technologists, academics, and students came together to discuss critical issues for surgery, neurosurgery, ai, and medicine. The four-day educational conference brought together the worlds of technology and surgery to break down silos and forge new connections in the world of artificial intelligence for surgeons. By popular acclaim, we are planning to continue to host this conference and/or similar ones in the future. This event was funded through ticket sales and sponsorships by major medical and technology companies including medtronic and integra.
