What Standardswork Inc does

Programs

  1. Advocacy: Since 2016, StandardsWork has operated the Knowledge Matters Campaign, a growing national advocacy effort that advances the cause of literacy and the science of reading through a variety of communications strategies. We've celebrated the success of 50 school districts across the country as part of the Knowledge Matters School Tour, maintain a website that is a "go to" place for districts adopting literacy curricula, and provide professional learning opportunities through webinars and a podcast series that has had over 500,000 downloads in just three seasons. Telling the story of implementing high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) through video is a key strategy. Our In The Know blog publishes new content on a (roughly) bi-weekly basis. The Campaign is active on all major social media platforms, with a steadily increasing number of followers. We've recently launched an allied campaign, History Matters, to advocate for more and better elementary history instruction.

  2. Academic Consulting: StandardsWork's (SW) consulting practice supports school leaders and school teams in focusing their efforts on research-based practices and high-leverage strategies when implementing science of reading-aligned literacy curricula. We help set priorities and provide clients with tools for monitoring real progress in their classrooms and provide on-the-ground professional learning. Additionally, we advise publishing companies about how best to maximize their materials and their training to align with research on the importance role of content knowledge and best pedagogical practices for building an English language arts curriculum based on it.

  3. U.S. Dept. of Ed. Contract Implementing College Readiness Standards in Adult Ed.: On September 28, 2024, SW was awarded a new 16-month contract by the U.S. Dept. of Ed.'s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) to extend OCTAE's work implementing challenging state-adopted standards in adult ed. Specifically, SW was engaged to assist OCTAE in the next stage of updating several Standards-in-Action (SIA) training initiatives. This work includes refining classroom observation trainings in ELA/literacy, mathematics, and English language acquisition, as well as the foundational-level training in ELA/literacy and mathematics. All trainings are designed to teach instructional leaders how to observe and deliver effective teaching and learning practices. In addition, the 2024-2026 contract requires SW to create a guide to support the implementation of the full suite of SIA resources and professional development, and to raise awareness of the range of SIA resources and training.

    $533,607 spent
  4. The StandardsWork Legacy Project in Civics Learning aims to address the deficiency in civics understanding by building a carefully curated resource bank linked to the USCIS Citizenship Test's 100 questions, available free of charge to teachers and students. By grouping the 100 questions into logical topics, the resource bank could help students and teachers understand the core principles that undergird the American constitutional system.

2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 19% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of STANDARDSWORK INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

STANDARDSWORK INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 39% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

62% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund STANDARDSWORK INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $310k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
